Well this riding season is off to a crappy start....

You know, sometimes I really have to wonder if there is so very few problems in my frozen northern city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that for our 4 month riding season we need yet another clampdown on bikes. Really, out of 1.5 million people there has to be greater issues dontcha think?

This year one of our useless city councilmen who obviously has a hatred for motorcycles has been trying and will undoubtedly succeed in passing new legislation that will not only triple the fine for loud pipes ($450 or so) but will result in a removal of the license plate rendering the bike unregisterable until returned to stock. There will be no official test, as the law is written to be completely up to officer discretion. A new police division has even been allocated to only hassle bikes. Must be bored since there is no drug problem, impaired drivers or domestic violence in our fine city *rolls eyes*. Apparently the only bikes that are safe are bone stock pipes bearing the "This bike conforms..." stamp. Although, should the officer decide I suppose it could still get a ticket but it would be easier to fight in court.

This isn't just aimed at the "BRUB BRUB BRUB" H-D type yahoos either. Even my sportbike riding brothers and sisters will be picked on. Perhaps even more so than cruisers since we have this stupid redneck ideal here that anyone wearing leathers MUST be out breaking the law. I have been pulled over numerous times for B.S. "reflector checks" and similar lame reasons.

Of course the straight pipe diesel trucks, fart-can muffler Hondas, deafening car audio systems and commercial trucks laying on their Jake brakes in town will be left completely alone. As will the fire truck that leaves the hall across the road from my house EVERY night at exactly 10:30 PM with its siren wailing just to blow a light they're too lazy to wait for. Either that or we have a very punctual serial arsonist.

Thankfully I have a second home in Phoenix, AZ where my business partner and I will be keeping our V-Twins for the forseeable future. At least there I can ride freely.

So this is just my opinion.  I think that alot of these guys deserve what they have coming to them, but in the process have ruined it for the average rider that just wants a little more rumble, throatyness out of their exhaust without going louder.

I have seen/heard alot of these bikers bliping their engine & making noise because they can and I also don't see the need for an exhaust that sets off car alarms when you go by.

I do not like that they are just picking on bikers, what is law for one sector should be law for everyone.  I do take my bike into Edmonton on a fairly regular basis and am running stock exhaust, but if I want to upgrade I'll have to seriously think about riding it into the city if this goes through.

It's a joke, sounds more like a revenue maker to me.

I got pulled over last year by a cop on a Harley, he actually said, " I heard you before I saw you ", so I said, " this is a bad thing ? "

His argument was people will not here you untill you are beside them, and it freaks people out, then they react in a bad way as they are startled.

He told me to put the stock pipes back on, if he pulled me over again he would give me a ticket.

I told him that we dissagree, and if he gives me a ticket, i'll gladly go to court and he can show me " how " he determined the decible level of my pipes, even though he had no meter with him.

I did'nt get a ticket, I would have loved to fight this in court.

Then he decided that he did'nt like my helmet, and asked me to show him the Dot tag.

Well, I know I brought this on myself, but, now i'm a little po'd.

So I asked him if he had a search warrant.

He was confused, so I explained it to him, my helmet is " not " part of the motorcycle it is my personal property, and if he wanted to see it, he could get a search warrant, this guy did'nt have much of a sense of humor so I took off my helmet, sat there as he looked for the tag, he found it, gave back my lid.

I am a believer that loud pipes save lives, but I also agree that there are some people out there that create their own problems, and problems for the rest of us by tearin up and down the streets at 3:00 am pissing off the neighbour hood, and it reflects bad on the rest of us.

DOT rating --> If your helmet doesn't have a sticker, remember it's up to the courts to prove that it's not DOT rated.

Don't know how much the Canada laws relate to the USA laws but this website is invaluable for biker rights --> http://www.motorcyclelawgroup.com/

Have a rally and pump money into their economy. We have one in Port Dover Ontario every Friday the 13th, they tried ticket bikes last year in Port Dover, from what I heard the charges went beyond a set date and all were dismissed. I guess they like the income the bikers have brought into the community, paved roads, parking lots. They were talking about raising the docking fees at their local marina for upgrades, money from Friday the 13th has now found its way to the docks to keep their fees down. Money Talks

This year (2010) it's the 13th of August, a Special Event (the 50th) 100,000 or more bikers for a one day event?

Stock Pipes  Save Lives

If Deer Crusher woke Donna up when I pull in the driveway at night she would kill me...

Started on a Yamaha mini Enduro then a 175 from that to a 250 trials bike then a 1979 Triumph Bonnieville Sport ,2007 Triumph America,2008 Victory Vision Tour Premium. The last three I still have but have to admit I stopped riding the 75 bonnie many years ago.

Haha yes Don you're right. We may have a way smaller population but our moron ratio is high!

Sounds like an all too familiar story Spider. I've even had to leave my bike on the side of the road and cab it home because a dumbass officer decided in his infinite wisdom that my DOT APPROVED helmet wasn't "heavy enough" to be legit. Are you kidding me!!!!! Ugh. It's not like I was wearing a beanie.

And don't get me wrong, guys. I'm not advocating ridiculously loud bikes, but if a Stage 1 Victory gets pulled off the road isn't that a bit much?

That sounds like the cop was on the rag that night.  All helmets in Canada can't be sold unless they have a DOT sticker on them, and I think the tag has to state it as well.  Any of the non legal ones have a tag inside stating that they are not DOT approved.

If the law hasn't passed yet there may be time to stop it.  Work through the local motorcycle shops, rider groups and others get people to call their city councilman and express disdain for the proposal.  I think you will find that it won't take too many calls to get your point across.
Riding a motorcycle is like riding a time machine.  Everything stops but the joy of movement in the open air.  Each ride is a vacation from ones cares and problems. Just wish I could take more of these little vacations.

I agree with your statement that if they are going to clamp down on one, they should go after all and not just pick on bikers

But in my opinion only, its a start, cause I've been riding for over 30 yrs and can't understand why people have to blip their throttle while sitting at the lights, they are not oil/gas mixed 2 stokes that you need to keep the bearings lubed.

I'm also getting tired of loud soup can cars, diesels and everything else that rattles my brain, (read heavy base music from that same car)

Call me an old Fkr, but I've had enough.  My Harley had stock pipes and so does my Vision, guess what.....I don't have a problem with backfiring either.

Okay time for another beer, got to turn on the TV, the Hockey game is on and somehow my daughter is sitting in Bill Ballard's seat again,  last year she had Wendal Clark sitting at the next table.

I totally agree! And the rev up/downshift move is COMPLETELY unnecessary on a syncromesh tranny. Ok, yes I need to do it in a semi, but yet I see the H-D guys do it (although it does make their clunky trannys a wee bit smoother) even the Jap cruisers with their perfect shifting gearboxes!!! Ugh.....

I went back to my dealer to see if I could get my stock pipes back, but since they cut that big piece off to install my swept pipes I think my Vic will become a US bike. I have a gorgeous GSXR1000 I may decide not to sell and "demo" for the summer.

Now now, the Mayor is a little busy right now, i'm sure he will be on line shortly.

I ride with the Mayor on a regular basis, he runs Drag pipes, I run Shot guns, we cover a good range of riders, i'm 46 and the Mayor, well he's a wee bit more mature than me, age wise, lol.

I try to be respectful of my surroundings, if I want, my bike is very civil, if I want, my bike is rattling windows, setting off car alarms, waking up people on cell phones, reminding people that I " AM " beside them when they choose to change lanes without looking, you can hear me coming, and you can hear me leaving.

I enjoy the sound of my bike, my exhaust is " MY " radio, I do not think age has much to do with the sound of my bike, it's a personal thing, you either like it or you don't. My opinion is not more important than anyone else here, but it is my opinion.

As far as the popping goes Brian, your bike still pops, it has popped from day one and Victory knows this, they just do nothing about it.

Of course it is no where as noticeable as a bike with stage one exhaust.

Some people enjoy a nice quiet ride, looking at the scenery, listening to their stereo, Ipod, and even some here use their cell phones through their helmets, talk to their passengers through head sets, etc.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that, if that's your cup of tea, but it's not for me.

I get distracted enough looking at the scenery, I could not imagine what would happen if I was distracted by a radio, or someone on the back of my bike started yappin away tell me about their day, etc.

My bike is my get a way, if you want to talk, we will pull over.

Crack down on the idiots at 3:00 am, most likely the're under the influance raising hell, the guy's at the stop light " blipin " their throttles most likely are tryin to keep their bikes running, or really just need people to look at them, the last thing we as bikers, or bike riders need are more dumb laws that blanket the entire motorcycle community.

I'm not offended, we have opinions, this new law is wrong.

That's funny, lol, even if they did call me a fag, my bike is so loud I could'nt hear what they said :)

Actually, I don't really care if someone calls me a fag, only if they call me late for dinner.

Go to your garage and record a 20 minute loop of you blipping your South Park pipes. Then put your legal mufflers back on and ride with your headphones on playing your new "Look At Me" soundtrack. If you're worried about people hearing you approach then use your horn. At least it faces forward.
