Cold Weather Starting

Any tips for cold weather starting? The other day, I was doing some work on my bike and tried to start it up. It was only 32 degrees F. Cranked and cranked and couldn't get fired up. This normal? Anything I should check / try. My closest dealer is 90 miles away.

I haven't had that issue just yet. I just make sure that I don't goose the throttle. How about giving out a little more info though. Miles? Any recent upgrades? When was the last time you fired it up? Is it "trying" to fire, or just churning away? Do you smell fuel?

Fuel pump coming on?

What happened to the SKYY????

If the fuel pump is coming on & priming the fuel system, just adjust the fast idle switch & try again. It may take 2 or 3 times for it fire up.

Fuel pump is comming on.  Trying to turn over . . . chugged a little, but engine ever fired up. 800 miles.  Don't smell fuel.  Last time I started it was 1 month ago . . . just idled in garage.  It was actually colder then.  No engine related modifications.

Where is the fast idle adjustment?

Thx

on your left handle bar, some call it the choke switch, if it still won't start  pull a plug & see if they are fouled. If they are clean them with sand paper and recheck the gap on the plug and reinstall. If I don't let mine reach operating temp I have the same problem everytime.

Nothing is wrong, it is typical of a bike that hasnt been startd in a while in colder weather.
First thing to do is sit on the bike and stand it up straight, then turn the key to the on position, wait 10 -15 seconds and push the button. It might take a a couple tries crank for 5 seconds wait five seconds and do it again. it will most likely start and run rough. if it doesnt start or runs rough open the throttle just to get the bodies open no more. should be fine after that.
the biggest trick is making sure it is upright !  let us know if this works,

Ok, I know I come off as a smart a$s on other threads. But this time I really need to understand something.

Why is it important to have the bike upright to start?

Shawn I get the same comments. It will start on the tip overs if it has fuel, spark & air.  If it is low on FUEL it may only pickup the fuel in the uptight position! LOL

Fine do it your way.

Oh one other thing , why the hell would you even think of starting a bike on its tipovers?

have a nice day :)

Man314, have you been at the SKYY ? It's not even 9pm out west. Clubford, could it be he has cabin fever, and just wants to pull our chain?

do you keep on a trickle charger?  If not. you should IMO.  Unless you did an engine mod, personally I would not start it.  Leaving it sit idle on the charger for the winter is best IMO unless you are going to ride it..

check the kill switch...did the same thing on my 4-wheeler.  got all in a huff and overlooked the obviuos.  Wore my batt. down to nothing before i realized it.  man i felt stupid.

if it is on, try the cycling method described above but don't crank (just turn it on, wait 5 seconds, turn it off for 5, repeat 4 or 5 times --> this will re-prime your injectors)...do not give bike throttle while starting...fuel injected systems don't require it.

One last thing --> like bubba said don't just start to hear it and shut it off.  If you start it (esp. a new bike) let it get up to full operating temp. before shutting off.  failure to do this can cause serious problems down the line.  I have time with it as i want to hear the chug, chug, chug too...grab a beer and forget about it.

Man,

Take a minute and read the manual that came with the bike. Victory does suggest, recommend ... state that when starting one of their bikes that they be upright. By starting and letting it run just a bit and shutting it off you take a chance of fouling the plugs. If you have fuel stabilizer in the gas it may take a bit more to start the bike also, I don't think that stuff is a volatile as gas.

Correct me if I am wrong, with the kill switch in the kill position, a Vic won't even crank..?
