MJW, I have also replied "elsewhere" but I wanted to reply here as well. I, too, have the stage 1 on my Cross Roads. I do get an occasional backfire but nothing like what I've read on JPs, etc. So you have NEVER had a "pop" while full throttle under load then release the throttle? In fact yesterday, while idling in my garage after a ride, it backfired just once. Not a big deal to me, in fact I kind of like it (odd, I know) but just curious if I'm the only one hearing the occasional pop. Again, fairly sporadic, but still there. Love the sound and extra power... Robert

Now that I have a few miles on it I can say that yes, it will pop from time to time. Maybe 3 times in 300 miles. Last week I replaced the stage 1 pipes with "atom bomb" 2 1/4" recores (that's a whole other story, I can't recommend his work based on what I received, it took 2 days of rework to make them acceptable). With the larger baffle and even more free flowing exhaust I got 1 pop and a couple of "gurgles" over about 100 miles. So yes, you will get some noise but it's so rare and unrepeatable that it's a none issue. I think that with the cats in place they got the popping issues resolved. Remove the cats and all bets are probably off.

Thanks for your reply. It is "rare", but still there, although more for me than apparently for you. In terms of your "whole other story", I'm sure we'd all be interested in knowing why you changed out the stage 1 to begin with?

Well, had it FLASHED and it runs sweeeet. No popping at all. I like it. I was thinking of getting some louder exhaust but the more I ride it the more I like this system. It was an easy install, the bike sounds good and for distance riding it is just right for me.

Long story short, I emailed Bob, the guy that does the recores. and he said he had a set "in stock" that I could have for a $50 core charge on top of the $200 recore fee. He indicated they were brand new off a Cross Roads so I paypal'd him the money and waited. When they showed up it was obvious these were his initial experimental pipes because the the welds were horrid, the end caps were welded on out of alignment meaning one tail pipe cover was pointing slightly down and the other almost straight up and the baffles weren't centered in the end cap. I bitched up a storm and he agreed to refund me some money so I took his refund and set about making these right. He never admitted these were anything but his normal quality and argued that the baffle didn't need to be centered and a tailpipe isn't needed! When I mounted them to test the sound it became quickly obvious that without a tailpipe the blowback from the end caps funnels hot exhaust gasses right into the cavity between the pipes and the saddle bags! The last thing I need are 2 convection ovens attached to the rear of the bike...... After 2 days of tinkering I got the end cap mounting tabs bent/re-drilled and fabricated tailpipes that slid into the baffles and allowed me to center the pipes within the tail pipe covers. I then cold welded them in place with JB Weld (I love that stuff), repainted them and mounted them up. The best way to describe the sound is imagine the difference from stock to stage 1 then take that volume difference again to get to these pipes. I bought them because I wanted to experiment with different sounds and since the stage 1 pipes are essentially an open design and I'm not removing the cats the likelyhood that I would need anything past the stage 1 flash is low and based on my 100 mile ride so far I think that's accurate. I'm probably going to take my existing stock pipes and see if I can come up with a better way to recore them myself. Rivco makes some very nice baffles for their pipes and one of their dealers is in town so I can get a set to measure for free. If I decide to do it I'll document the process and possibly offer a service if I can come up with an affordable procedure. Here's the baffles I'm really interested in:

MJW930 RPW has a 2 inch baffle and it sounds great. I am tempted to buy ther muffler. I would need to get rid of my stage one and the stocker. Or just have two mufflers for traveling or in the city riding

I saw those and boy the one out of Maryland must be using the 2.5 inch baffle. I like the RPW. I sounds deep and not too loud. They (RPW) need to film one out on the street just like the one you shot or something close. I'll for go the backrest and buy one if I like what I hear. Just need it in the open. The garage seems to make things sound louder and better.
