Garmin 2820 and Dealer POI's

One of the only "drawbacks" of the Garmin 2820 on the Vision, as opposed to the discontinued 2720 offered by Victory at ridiculous pricing, is the inclusion of the Victory Dealer network as a POI category.  I know I have used this feature as it is implemented in my Lexus to find a "nearest dealer" and so, I find it useful - but not useful enough to buy an outdated GPS at inflated pricing and with fewer features.

This is probably not news to most but, just in case, I wanted to mention that you can upload the dealer list to your 2820 easily and have the same benefit if you choose.  Given the spread out nature of the Victory dealers, I think it's a good idea.  I am planning my 1st long trip this fall from my home in Baltimore to see good friends near Pensacola, Fla.  I don't expect problems, but I feel better with my Victory Riders Club card in my wallet (darn thing came in 3 weeks after buying!) and a list of dealers in my 2820 GPS.

It is not a difficult process and if anyone wants more info, I'll gladly explain what I did.  Oh, if you also miss the Victory splash screen from the 2720, you can easily change that as well.

Which model GPS ships with the 2009 Visions?  2720 or 2820?

My understanding is that the Anniversary Vision will include the 2820. On the other models, the GPS is considered an option. Make sure your dealer doesn't try to stick you with one of the 2720 models he may have in inventory or overcharge you for the 2820 as they are heavily discounted online. Like mentioned above, the only features included on the Victory GPS models that aren't on the standard models are the Victory logo on the start up screen and the pre-programmed dealer POIs.

When I picked up my 08 Vision, I had the dealer install the GPS harness and I provided the 2820 which I picked up on Amazon for around 30% less than the dealer was charging.

To check prices, click The VOG Store link at the top of the page an type in Garmin 2820 in the Amazon search box on that page. If you buy it this way, the site will get a commission! (Sorry about the shameless plug). I just checked this feature and you can find the 2820 for $498 (plus $8 shipping and No Sales Tax) via The VOG Amazon Store. That's half the price the dealers are charging.

I currently ride a Victory Vision, but have owned a Harley Road King, Harley Softtail Special, Honda Goldwing, Yamaha YZF 600, Honda Shadow, Honda Helix, Yamaha Scooter, Honda CX-500, Honda 50 and a Moped!

No harm in plugging your site Andy.  I have checked it out before.  Pretty convienent.  I would consider it in this case but I am on the list for the 10th anniversary bike and I am just trying to learn more about the GPS before it actually arrives.

Thanks Goalie,

Here's the scoop on the 2820:

It's the same as the 2720 but adds Bluetooth and XM. While the Anniversary Vision will have the XM receiver installed in the trunk and wired to the controls, you may not need the Garmin's XM receiver unless you want to add the Nav Traffic feature. If so, it requires an add-on fee to your XM subscription and a second antenna (sold separately). The XM Nav Traffic Antenna is large...around 3" in diameter and the easiest place to install it is on the dash. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it works fairly well.

When you get your bike, take a moment to connect your GPS to your computer and log onto Garmins website (www.garmin.com) to make sure you have the most recent version of the software and maps. It's my understanding that Garmin will give you one map update free and after that there's a charge for the map updates. But, like other software companies, there's usually a bug fix or two that you'll get with software updates.

If you get the Nav Traffic feature, you'll receive both a visual and an audible notice when you're approaching a traffic tie up. While the visual warnings are fairly useless, the audibles are pretty good. My experience has shown me that it's not instant, not extremely accurate, but does add the ability to automatically re-route you when you're on a GPS route and approach a traffic jam.

One added feature I noticed when I updated my current 2820 is that you can now change the keyboard layout from the standard alphabetical to a QWERTY layout. This makes the data entry go a bit faster (my opinion).

The Garmin's Bluetooth is designed to pair with at cell phone, but I didn't have much success when I tried it. I'll give it another try when the new bike arrives.

Overall, I've been very pleased with the 2820 on the Vision as I'm "directionally challenged." On lazy days, I'll head out to the country and ride for a couple of hours without paying too much attention on where I'm going. When I want to head home, I simply press "home" and follow the directions.

There's a number of additional features and reading the manual is a good thing.

I currently ride a Victory Vision, but have owned a Harley Road King, Harley Softtail Special, Honda Goldwing, Yamaha YZF 600, Honda Shadow, Honda Helix, Yamaha Scooter, Honda CX-500, Honda 50 and a Moped!

Greetings!

New owner here ('08 Vision Tour Premium) and I have a question regarding the GPS install. I purchased my Vision before getting the 2820 but had the dealer pre-install the factory mounting bracket and cable. However, the cable is not routed through the center console, instead it just comes up from the right underside of the console. The cable itself has a grommet so I assume it's intended to be run through the console, close to the mount. My question is where the hole should be. If anybody has pictures of where their cable/grommet location is, it would be exctremely helpful as I'm heading out to start disassembling right now. I'm hoping there's a knockout or other indication of where it should be but a picture might be needed.

Also, I did manage to change my splash screen to this:

If anyone wants the GIF file for this image, let me know, I can e-mail it to you. Thanks in  advance for the help and have a great weekend!

I believe if you remove your center console there is a pre-marked hole on the underside of the panel.  If I am correct from reading posts it shows exactly where to drill for the GPS mount.

 Thanks for the response.

I'm not sure if you understood my post but I was looking for the cable hole location. The mount was already installed by the dealer in the correct place. Either way, I ended up doing the install and it looks good to me. Not sure if it's where it's supposed to be because I didn't see a factory cutout or knockout. Anyway, it's done and I'm happy!

I'm going to post my install on a seperate thread in case anyone is interested...

Question will the 2720 allow the Victory Dealer network download?
Started on a Yamaha mini Enduro then a 175 from that to a 250 trials bike then a 1975 Triumph Bonnieville Sport ,2007 Triumph America,2008 Victory Vision Tour Premium. The last three I still have but have to admit I stopped riding the 75 bonnie many years ago.
